Making The Most Of Your Garden In Spring/Summer

Spring/Summer is the perfect time to concentrate on getting your garden just right. Now that the warmer weather has set in, you’ll notice just how fast the flowers and grass are growing, and how quickly your outdoor space is transforming. As most of us have at least a few days off over the Springbank period, spend some making the most of the lovely Spring weather outdoors, to hone your garden and ensure that you get it looking fabulous by the summer.

Discuss Design

The next time you get a moment with your partner or family, spend some time talking over what worked and what didn’t with your garden last year. From fencing to paving and decking for alfresco dining, are you making the most of your outdoor space? If you’ve found that you are lacking in privacy, space or storage, you may want to consider enlisting a landscape gardener to help you reinvent your garden for the season ahead.

Head to the Garden Centre

Before Springbank weekend arrives, get down to the garden centre to stock up on beautiful bedding plants for your outdoor space, as well as the essentials such as compost, pots and any tools that went missing last year. Many garden centres are open the whole weekend but may be incredibly busy throughout, so the sooner you get this done the better.

Weeding and Mowing

Time consuming though it may be, you need to tackle the basic tasks before you can get to work on the more exciting aspects of Springbank gardening. The sooner you remove the weeds from your garden, the easier a job you’ll have of maintaining your weed-free patios, flower beds and allotments over the summer.

And regular mowing can encourage your lawn to grow thick, full and lusciously green as the season continues. So keep on top of weeding and mowing from now onwards.

Sowing and Planting

May is the perfect time to get to work on planting and sowing, when you can be fairly confident that the weather will stay mild for the more delicate seeds and flowers. Bear in mind the flowering times and durations of your bedding plants to ensure that your garden is full of colour throughout the whole season.

Alpines and perennials are a strong and durable choice, but there are some pretty flowers that will really add a splash of life to your garden in Spring. Pansies, pasque flowersand hyacinths are all beautiful at this time of year.

Gardening is a great activity for all ages, and is even something that the kids can enjoy during the holidays. Address the more menial and heavy duty tasks first, then you can move onto the exciting choices of what flowers to plant, what accessories to buy for your garden, and most importantly when to schedule the first BBQ of the year! What? You don’t have a BBQ? That’s no excuse disposable ones are cheap, fabulous and much easier to clean up, go grab them from the supermarket now.
