A person with high time preference is only concerned with instant gratification and gaining what he or she wants in the immediate future relative to most people, a person who has taken the time to develop a low time preference places more emphasis than the average person on their health, wealth and happiness in the future. For example, if you had a trustworthy friend and they asked you to lend them $20 till the next day then they come to your house with the $20 and say you can have that now or $60 dollars in ten days. A person with high time preference would take the $20 while the person with low time preference would wait ten days and triple their money.

Specific

Your goal needs to be written in specifically and you need to set yourself a specific date by which you will achieve it. When we create a specific goal for ourselves we have a much better chance of achieving it. Consider who is involved in your goal, what you want to accomplish, where you will accomplish it when you will accomplish it by, identify what you will require and any constraints you may have. Finally, consider why you want to achieve your goal.

Measurable

Set yourself some concrete criteria that you can use to measure your progress. If you want to be rich consider how rich you want to be, put a number on it. Once you achieve the target amount you can increase it.

Attainability

It is no good to set a silly goal that you know is unattainable or you will just give up, as we said above set yourself a goal that you know will stretch you slightly and then increase it once you have attained your desire.

Realistic

Your goal needs to be realistic but it also needs to represent serious progress, make sure it stretches your capabilities.

Timely

You need to set a timeframe for which you will achieve your goal.
